TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH DURING A CRISIS

If we thought that the first months in 2020 were crazy then nothing definitely prepared us for the latter part of it especially as Nigerian citizens. Our mental health has been tested, stress and anxiety has been on the rise as a result of the insecurity and unrest in the nation. 

Although stress and anxiety are common experiences for most people. Majority of it’s occurrence can be triggered in the workplace, at home and through the content we consume online. Knowing that most persons spend a large amount of their time consuming content online, it would be impossible for their mental health not to be affected.

Exercise 

Exercising has tremendous benefits and it is one of the easiest ways to deal with stress. Exercising regularly can help you cope with anxiety easier than those who don’t. It lowers the body stress hormones, helps you sleep better and improves general body and mind confidence. 

So when you feel overwhelmed and the panic attacks creeping in, take a walk, dance or perform some yoga. It helps. 

Light up a candle 

Scented candles ritual is highly therapeutic in improving your mental health. Burning a scented candle may help relieve your feelings of anxiety and stress. Using scents to handle stress is known as aromatherapy. Light a scented candle to enjoy the calming scents. 

Write things down 

Overthinking is a trigger that can induce mental stress and negatively affect your mental health. One way to deal with it is by creating a journal to document your thoughts. Whatever you feel thankful for, write it down. Make it a daily habit or morning ritual. This will help you focus on the present and the good in your life.

Find a support system

We all need someone from time to time to talk to. Social support from family and friends can go a long way. Being part of a friend network can help give you a sense of belonging and self worth. Sometimes support is all you need to help your mental health. 

Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness is a practice of being in the present and focusing on the things that are happening at that point. Mindfulness will keep the mind from deviating and help it focus on the sensations at that point in time.
