Sex should be exciting, exhilarating, pleasurable and electrifying. The kind of feeling that lives you breathless with a goofy smile on your face. Sex should be anything but not painful and uncomfortable. Pain is an uncomfortable feeling and it can ruin your sex moments and in the long run, your sex life. But, the sad truth is that about 75% of women have found sex to be painful and uncomfortable at a point in their lives. Experiencing pain during sex can be linked to various reasons, some type of pain has more consequence than the others and may require a visit to the gynecologist.
Here are some of the reasons for pain during sex
1. Vaginal Infection
Vaginal infections such as genital herpes, UTIs, chlamydia, gonorrhea and yeast infections can make sex uncomfortable. Women with such infection can cause them to experience inflammation or irritation in their vulva or vaginal area which makes penetrative sex difficult causing pain. Some infections can affect the cervix and uterus which causes a deeper kind of pain during sex. It is advised that you visit your doctor in the case of a brewing infection to get treated.
2. Vaginismus
This is when the muscles at the opening of the vagina contract and tighten involuntarily with so much tension that it doesn’t allow for entry. It can cause the muscles to tighten to the extent that even a tampon cannot be inserted. Since the tightening of these muscles is involuntary, it can happen when a person is aroused and wants to have sex, thus leading to sexual frustration. Different forms of therapy can be used to treat it, and a visit to a gynecologist is advised.
3. Endometriosis
This is a condition whereby the layer of tissue that normally grows in the uterus, grows outside of it. Most often, this is on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and tissue around the uterus and ovaries. The pain involved is deeper in the pelvis and can cause pain during sex. It can cause pain, abnormal periods and infertility in most cases.
4. Vaginal dryness
When penetrative sex is painful, it may be as a result of not being well lubricated. Moisture is an important factor during penetrative sex and can lead to friction which can cause tear and irritation. Vaginal dryness can be caused by a change in hormones, medications, pregnancy and some birth control pills. It is advised that lubes should not be used if experiencing vaginal dryness.
5. Vaginitis
This is an inflammation of the vagina that can result in discharge, itching and pain. It can be caused by yeast and vaginal infections. If you are experiencing discharge with a burning sensation in your vagina and vulva, you should pay a visit to your gynecologist. The good news is that it can be treated.
6. Semen allergy
This is rare but it does exist. This is called seminal plasma hypersensitivity and is a rare allergic reaction to proteins found in a man’s semen. Some common symptoms of sperm allergy are redness, swelling, pain, itching and a burning sensation in the area that has come in contact with sperm.
7. Sex type
The kind of sex style you may have been having can cause your vagina to be sore. If you are having rough sex with your partner, friction can be great, but too much friction can cause you some discomfort. The kind of sex you are having can cause you pain, especially when the sex is rough.
8. Endowed partner
Have you ever had sex with a guy so big below that you felt your womb got shifted and you couldn’t walk after sex? If your partner is well endowed below, it may be hitting your cervix during penetration and cause pain during sex.
