Today on Mahogany woman crush, we are going to be shining our spotlight on Taraji P. Henson
She’s going to be hosting BET’s 2017 ‘Black Girls Rock’ Award, saluting Issa Rae, Yara Shahidi Roberta Flack and more…
Yes our own very black and beautiful Taraji P. Henson, whom many of you know as Cookie Lyon from the popular Empire series has been tapped to host BET’s 2017 Black Girls Rock Award honoring “Insecure” creator, writer and star, Issa Rae, “Black-ish” star Yara Shahidi and others.
Taraji P. Henson posted this on her Instagram page saying “I’m honored to be the host of ‘BLACK GIRLS ROCKTM’ Awards. I love the message and I love Beverly Bond and her vision. I was lucky to be honored in 2011. It was truly a highlight of my life. Now I’m back to be part of this amazing night to honor the strong and powerful Yara, Issa Rae, Roberta, Suzanne, Derrica and Natalie. Let’s make history together as we come together as women of brains, beauty and in support of each other,”
The ceremony will take place on August 5th 2017 at the New Jersey performing Arts Center in Newark. Rea is set to receive the Star Power Award, while actress/activist Shahidi will take home the Young Gifted and Black honor.
Other honorees include Roberts Flack (Living Legend Award); financier Suzanne Shank (Shot Caller Award); and community organizers Derrica Wilson and Natalie Wilson of The Black & Missing Foundation (Community Change Agent Award).
The BET 2017 Black Girls Rock Award will air on BET on August 20.
We at Mahogany congratulate all BET 2017 Black Girls Rock Award winners, and to Taraji P. Henson, we say keep shining.
